U N I C O R N S

A mythical animal generally depicted with the body and head of a horse, the hind legs of a stag, the tail of a lion, and a single horn in the middle of the forehead.
- dictionary explanation

Origins of Unicorns - theory 1:

Contrary to popular belief, Unicorns did not evolve from horselike ancestors. Instead they are decendants of cloven-hoofed mammals such as pigs, camels deer, and antelope. This is believed because unicorns have cloven hooves and have true horns which you will find on no horse, only cloven-hoofed animals. To narrow down their "relatives" even more, we can say that they are more likely to be related to antelope as opposed to deer because of the horn. Deer antlers are bonelike structures that grow out of the males (generally) forehead in the spring and summer. The antlers are then shed for the winter months. Now, the horns found in antelope, cattle and seep are never shed and continue to grow throughout the animals lifetime. Also, both sexes typically grow horns where as only the buck (male deer) grows antlers. Unicorns may have first appeared in Asia or northern Africa, both of which are now homes for true antelope.

The earliest known cloven-hoofed mammel fossils date from the Eocene times which was about 50 million years ago. The stock that gave rise to the antelope and their kin did not, however, appear until the Miocene Era which was when many kinds of antelopelike creatures first started appearing in southern Europe and the great plains of Asia. One of these mammals was the Prostrepsceros in India which is probably an ancestor to both the antelope and unicorn.

Some of the fossil types found in the cooler forests of Asia revealed the Plioceros bicornus which probably moved into the Alps of Europe and some into the southern slopes of the Himalayas and was also most likely the earliest type of unicorn. Since the population of the oldest known unicorn was split (some in Himalayas, some in Europe) they adapted to their environment and grew apart in similiarities, thus making the European Unicorns and the Asian Unicorns.

Origins of Unicorns - theory 2:

The history of the unicorn has it's origin in India, where a gaselle drank the water from a river intoxicated with the sperm of a frigid hermit.

Modern Types of Unicorns

Karkadann

The karkadann is now belived to be extinct but once flourished on the grassy plains and deserts of India and Persia, possibly even Africa (northeastern part). It commanded great respect because of it's ferocity and strength. The unicorn was supposed to have closely resembled the oryx (kind of like an antelope but bigger). The elephant was the karkadann's greatest enemy with the rhinoceros next in line. The body of the unicorn was as large as a rhinoceros and had a tail like a lions. Each foot had two or even three hooves and instead of the white horn we all picture on a unicorn, there rested a black one spiral one.

It is said that the karkadann would stand for hours beneath the nest of a dove, frightning away it's (dove's) predators so that it could enjoy the dove's beauty.

Kirin

A unicorn of Asian origin, the kirin resembles a stag but has the body of a musk deer and swishes around an ox tail. The easiest way to distinguish it from all other unicorns are the spots on it's back. Also, its yellowish belly is multi-colored (red, yellow, blue, white, and black). Kirin's tend to be shy, resulting in the lack of knowledge of their existance. They never fight, unlike the karkadann.

It comes mainly from Japan but it is also supposed to be found in only the most remote forests in China.

European UnicornMonoceros europus

The European unicorn has a straight horn (almost) which is tightly twisted and sharp as well as large ears, big brown eyes, horse-like tail, and stand about three and a half feet at the shoulders. Males weigh about or sometimes more than 100 pounds and the females, slightly smaller, tend to be only around 80 pounds. Their coats get thicker in the winter months as well as longer and lighten to fawn or creamy tints. A European Unicorns call sounds like a sad wail.

Northern European Unicorn

Supposed to be a relative of the European unicorn, the unicorn from the northern part of Europe differs only slightly. It's coat is much shagger, especially near the ankles, are larger than the European unicorns, they have blue eyes, are bigger in size and have longer, more flowing manes and tails. This unicorn, like the kirin, is extremely shy.

American Unicorn

The American unicorn is mainly known for looking exactly like a magnificent white horse except for the exception of the single magically made straight horn on the center of its forhead. This unicorn loves to eat clover and blackberries. The american unicorn has a very close relationship with the pegasus and loves to run with him/her. This unicorn can purify water and air and heal wounds with its horn. A male can grow to over 200 pounds while the female can only grow to about 100 but don't take that as a sign of weakness. Females can move twice as fast as males and are more known to heal wounds and purify air and water. This type of unicorn loves to travel in groups or herds.

The animal has been described as beautiful, wild, good and evil. Like the human, the unicorn has many characteristics. Some say it is drawn to the innocence & beauty of of a virgin, and can only be tamed by her. Hunters have been haunting the unicorn with the virgin as a bate.

What attracts humans to the unicorn is it's horn. They say the horn brings luck in love and power, and drinking from the horn can heal many diseases.

The tale of the unicorn has been told in both the Muslim religion and Christianity. The unicorn has also been seen in a lot of art through out history, such as drawings, paintings and icons.

The unicorn symbolizes both innocence and beauty, and evil and death.

Unicorn
There is a chapel in the woods
Where from the farthest-seeing senses rule
There is a scroll inside a casket...
Clear blue eyes have worn this outfit

Yes I knew it was no moonshine, it is real
I feel much better
Now I know this spiral shaft
Can possess the brightness of the light

Oh, I sayeth, thou art mine true companion
And I wish
Thou wilt enter my kingdom
Oh, mesmerising unicorn

When if danger it will glow
A glimmer can foresee all threats to come
Gone are disbeliefs and doubts
It would be nice, so nice...
Oh, I sayeth, thou art mine true companion
And I hope, thou wilt enter my kingdom
Oh yes, I wish, I really wish
